GNOWANGERUP WHEAT PRODUCTION

State Record: ‘Clear Hills’ January 1930

The yield of 46 bushels obtained by the winner, Mr C. E. Cockram, of "Clear Hills", of the Gnowangerup Society, constitutes another centenary record.
The previous highest yield was 40 bushels per acre attained by Mr A. W. Parkins Mr. Parkins, also of Gnowangerup; in 1927 and 1928.”


 


 

Wheat Records (1931)
In connection with the 50 acre Crop Competitions conducted by the Royal Agricultural Society, the Director of Agriculture points out that a special prize of £5/5/0 is awarded each year to the competitor gaining the highest bushel yield per acre in the competition.
The award this year has been made to Messrs C. Smith and Sons, of Yarding, Bruce Rock District Agri cultural Society, whose crop of the variety Cluclub was calculated to yield 43 bushels per acre.
The official record is 46 bushels per acre, established in 1929 by C. E. Cockram, of Pallinup, with the variety Yandilla King.

This prize was first awarded in 1925, the winners to date being as follow: —
1925 — Bebiton and Sons, Three Springs, Nabawa, 34 bushels
1926 — Cuming Bros., Camamah, Yandilla King, 38 bushels.
1927 — A. W. Parkinson, Gnowangerup, Yandilla King, 40 bushels.
1928 — A. W. Parkinson, Gnowangerup, Yandilla King, 40 bushels.
1929 — C. E. Cockram, Pallinup, Yandilla King, 46 bushels.
1930 -  C., Smith and Sons, Yarding, Gluclub, 43 bushels.
 

In this year's competition the average yield of the 165 competitors was 27.4 bushels per acre, and as an indication of the high standard obtained, 18 competitors obtained yields of 35 bushels and over, 61 of 30 bushels and over, and 119 of -25 bushels and over.

The estimated average yield for the whole of the State for this season is .12.7 bushels per acre.
The following competitors were amongst those who obtained a yield of 30 bushels or over per acre:—

R. Formby & Co. Ltd., Gnowangerup, Yandilla King 32;
A. McD.Sargent, Boongadoo, Major, 32;
H. J. Bishop, Lake Grace, Nabawa, 31;
J. Woodburn, Lake Grace, Yandilla King, 31;
E. H. Fry, Lake Grace, Gluyas Early, 31;
C. Taylor, Pallinup, Yandilla King, 31;
C. A. Whyatt, Pallinup,- Yandilla King, 30;  
A. Johnston, Gnowangerup, Nabawa, 30;
W. G. Murray, Borden, Yandilla King, 30.”
